A day of celebration and odds and ends...

Posted in Unspecified

Happy Birthday to my sister, Lisalisabobisa!
It sucks that you have to work today and tonight, but we'll all celebrate on another day...:) Oh yeah, I got you a cute present, you'll love it...:)

Well, we got done with the one bathroom. A few days ago, we started on the other bathroom. We took a couple of tiles off to see what if any damage there was and what a surprise! We wound up ripping off all the tiles to find it was all wet, down to the wood. Grrr, the builder of these homes is a jerk. All they had behind there was a cheap, thin piece of green board.

So, today was putting new insulation in there, black tarp, and concrete board. We only did one wall and have to have a plummer come out tomorrow to change out the pipes, before we can continue.
We can't afford to pay someone to redo the shower, so we are doing it ourselves. (Except for the plummer, thank goodness for credit cards) My husband has been practicing on a fake wall in the garage, putting up tiles. So far so good.

I swear, owning a house, nope I think it's the other way around, the house owns you, LOL. Soon as you fix one thing, something else needs to be fixed. It's a constant battle. We should just sell and rent an apartment. No, on second thought, out here the rent for an apartment is almost as much as the mortgage on our house! Might as well pay this sucker off in 11 years.

The weather here has been awful! It's been so hot and humid, it sucks all the energy out of you. I wish we had air conditioning...:( Oh well, tomorrow is suppose to be a little cooler, yay!

On a sad note, George Carlin died. It's a sad day, I just loved him...

Hey, thanks for the comment on my latest post :)

jeffstunes - 1:54 AM - 6/23/2008

I hear you about the house owning you! When we do a project in our house, something always happens and it turns out to be a big huge project! Like a window replacement... 1-2 hour job, took us probably close to 8 hours. LOL

itsmylife - 4:09 AM - 6/23/2008

Happy birthday to your sister! Well you are right owning a house means: the house owns you!. There's always something to do! It's a never ending job!

readerwil - 4:11 AM - 6/23/2008

Cam - 6:28 AM - 6/23/2008

Thanks Laurie!! Yeah I have to work at both jobs but oh well, I can handle it...lol

This heat does drain everything out of you. I went swimming yesterday with Mark and Maxim. Mom went in for a few minutes. It was so refreshing, I think I will spend a lot of time in there this summer:)

lisalisabobisa - 7:32 AM - 6/23/2008

It's finally hot here too! sadly I don't know if it is hot...or I'm having hot flashes! I feel like such a ninny!

Practicing on a fake wall is a great idea! The biggest mistake I made was when it came to grouting the tiles. Work in small areas! I did too much at a time and by the time i was supposed to "smooth out" the grout it had dried to hard. I didn't get that nice smooth look I wanted. Make sure the first row is perfectly straight...after that the rest will go in place by themselves!

I hope you plan on taking pictures! I love looking at before and after pictures!

Happy birthday Lisa !!
Oh gosh , no air conditioner ?? I've heard on the news the heat you all are having. It's been in the 80's this weekend here. It was so nice. (for a change) but probaly not for long. Yep, our house owns us too...there's always something needed. I've thought the same thing..we should just rent. haha. ~hug

Didn't you had a building inspector before you bought that house?

I hope you dont find to many bad surprises! But then again, it brings you and your hubby closer together and in the end it will really feel like home.

logis - 11:36 AM - 6/23/2008

By the time you're done, you'll be able to add general contractor to your resumé.

slayerbarbie - 1:44 PM - 6/23/2008

Up here, we've barely gotten to 80 so far this summer. But the word is that is going to change by this weekend.

But you can keep your hot stuff. It's nice now, but, as you know, it gets a little chilly here in winter.

drdog - 8:46 PM - 6/23/2008

Happy Birthday to Lisa.
Yes, sometimes I wonder if people renting don't have the right idea. When you have a problem, you call the landlord and then it's his/her problem. And you can only hope you have a good landlord that will fix something right away.

I don't know about you, but it seems like everytime we decide to do a LITTLE job, it turns into something bigger than we thought it was going to be, because other things seem to pop up that also need to be repaired/changed or replaced. Yes I think you can say the house owns us. Good luck with completing the project with out any extra problems.

Patty - 1:15 PM - 6/24/2008

Oh so true about the house owning you. LOL It seems like houses are always demanding something new be done to them!

DeeJay - 6:30 PM - 6/24/2008

Jefftunes--You're welcome!

LauriesAsylum - 8:58 AM - 6/25/2008

itsmylife---I know! The plummer we hired to do work in the shower was here for 6 hours! One thing wouldn't work, so he had to do something else, and so on and so on. Thank goodness he only charged us $250.00 because my husband did an MRI on him a week ago!

LauriesAsylum - 9:00 AM - 6/25/2008

Wil--That's for sure. Every year there seems to be a major project to be done. But, if you don't take care of those things while they are small, it only gets to be a bigger problem and costing way more money!

LauriesAsylum - 9:01 AM - 6/25/2008

Chris--Lisa says thank you!

LauriesAsylum - 9:02 AM - 6/25/2008

Cam--I will, I already took before pics and one after tearing everything out. We've never done anything like this, so I don't know how it will turn out. I may not want to post an after pic, LOL.

LauriesAsylum - 9:03 AM - 6/25/2008

Lisa---I know, I wish I had a pool. It's really good exercise cuz it works every muscle in your body..:)

LauriesAsylum - 9:04 AM - 6/25/2008

LMC---Oh wow! Thanks for the advice, that's really good to know, because we probably would have slathered the grout over a huge area before we started pushing it in between the tiles.

LauriesAsylum - 9:07 AM - 6/25/2008

Windy---I know, but I would really hate to throw my money away renting. We did that for too many years... But, luckily we had really good landlords, they let us do improvements and they would pay us back, so that was nice!

LauriesAsylum - 9:09 AM - 6/25/2008

Logis---The inspectors didn't look behind walls, and that's where the problem was. Almost everyone in my neighborhood has had to redo their bathrooms because of the same problems. It's the builders fault, he did a cheap and fast job to get this neighborhood built.

I do love my house! So, as much as I might gripe about fixing something, a lot of hard work from my husband and I have gone into this house, which makes me love it even more!

LauriesAsylum - 9:13 AM - 6/25/2008

Demetrius---Really! I actually learned a lot watching this plummer the other day. He was really cool, he would walk me through everything he was doing.

LauriesAsylum - 9:15 AM - 6/25/2008

Peter---I know, it's way too cold for me where you live! I would be alright living there if I could stay in my home with a fire going 24/7, LOL.

It has cooled off the past couple of days, it's actually really nice right now. I hope it stays this way for a bit...

LauriesAsylum - 9:17 AM - 6/25/2008

Patty---You are so right. With every job we've ever done around this house, it's never been cut and dried. It always led to something else having to be done, LOL.

LauriesAsylum - 9:18 AM - 6/25/2008

Deejay---Yep, you are so right! But, in the end, it's always so nice to see the end result...:)
